The exponential growth of the Gambling industry in Estonia in the last few years has unexpectedly turned this Baltic nation into a paradise for those who just love to bet their money and have some fun in the casinos, gaining a reputation as “Eastern Europe’s Las Vegas”.
The explanation for this phenomenon dates back to 1991, after the country declared its independence from the Soviet Union. It was then when the government, in an attempt to attract investors to its shores after the collapse of the Soviet Union, started giving away licenses for the establishment of casinos with few controls over them, facilitating since then the exponential growth of the industry in the country.
This is how today, at least 18 gambling investing
companies have opened venues in Estonia and 139 casinos are operating in the country, an amount very unusual for a nation which has a population of only 1.3 million. The industry itself has recognized the growth and the potential of Estonia as a destination for casino fans, a proof of this is the prize given by Bluf Europe magazine, which declared Tallinn, its capital, as one of the top 3 European cities to play Poker in 2007.
In a study held between 2004 and 2006 by the Estonian government, it was revealed that 80% of the population had tried some form of Gambling, proving the popularity of the casinos among its population. But not only the Estonians enjoy their casinos, many tourists are arriving to the country to try their luck in this “Eastern Europe’s Las Vegas”.
