Town votes in favor of casino gambling

Casino gambling won in Adams -- but not by much.

In a non-binding ballot question Monday, Adams residents voted 483-to-402 in favor of casino gambling, which is not permitted in Massachusetts.

The issue has been considered by Adams voters before. In 1978, voters approved the proposal by a 150-vote margin, while the matter failed in a county-wide non-binding referendum.

And in 1983, Adams voters again approved a casino-gambling proposal, this time by a nearly 400-vote margin.

On Monday, Adams voters also re-elected selectwoman Myra Wilk to another three-year term.

The election saw a small turnout. Of the nearly 5,900 registered voters in Adams, only 970 -- or about 16 percent --turned out.
